For our 3rd wedding anniversary, we decided to go out to a restaurant. Since we were visiting the Washington DC area, my brother took it upon himself to suggest a good place to go to for dinner. He suggested we go to Logan Tavern, a place with a large variety menu, a good wine list, and a relaxing atmosphere.
The tavern is located at 1423 P St. NW in Washington DC. The block is full of restaurants, bars, pubs, gyms, and cafés. DC, as the locals call it, is almost 100% single people who work in and around all the government buildings and facilities. I stated this fact because my son was probably the only baby within 100 mile radius. At almost every street corner, somebody stared at him as if the fell off the moon, or "How in the heck do you produce something so amazing?!". I know I'm sold, but enough people stopped us and commented on how amazing and handsome our son is. Ok, let's get back on track, dinner at Logan Tavern…
We walked into a dim lighted space, and it took me a couple seconds to get used to it. In this first space, the bar was the main attraction, with some tables and booths scattered around. Our waitress took us to another space which was also dimly lit. We were seated in front of a big window facing the street so we could look at all the passer byres. I sat in front of 3 deer horns on the wall… cool. After receiving the menus, everybody looked at me to see what wine we would drink tonight. I chose a Californian Pinot Noir. The wine was the Chalone Vineyard Monterey County Pinot Noir 2009. The wine had a ruby color, with aromas of cherry, spices, oak and cassis. It had tastes of cherry, grapefruit, oak and leather, with a light body and a light sour finish. This wine accented our food and we enjoyed it throughout the evening.
The two entrées that were interesting were the Steak au Poivre… and my hamburger (I wanted to play it safe). The steak came with a wine-like gravy. It seemed that they took some wine and gave it a jammy consistency. The gravy was a bit sweet, and "caught your tongue" just like wine does at times. The steak itself was delicious and I could tell that it was good meat. The mashed potatoes were creamy and were a perfect match for the steak and gravy. I ordered some fried mushrooms to go with my burger. I ordered it medium-rare, and that's exactly what I got. The meat was real tasty and juicy. A great American burger. The French fries were good, not too oily, so I gave them 7.5 points out of 10.
Only in the US will you see a pickle with a burger
With almost every bite, I glimpsed at the deer horns. I was thinking to myself – "When will I finally get a chance to order a deer steak or burger?". I really had no idea when the opportunity would come along, so I finished my burger, and stopped thinking about my future culinary schemes or hunting plans.
Everybody enjoyed dinner, especially while my amazing son slept quietly in his carriage…
